about the course
8 videos · 2 h 9 min

This course is for people who already have a hang and can play a simple rhythm on it, but cannot improvise: the melodies they learned have run out and nothing of their own comes together. The course does not cover posture or basic strokes. It is about building your own music out of strokes you already know.

The foundation is a 4/4 rhythm: eight alternating strokes, the ding on "one", the slap click on "five". From it we build the musical square, a complete phrase of four bars. The core video covers five ways to put one together. Then come more advanced techniques: chords, triplets, flams, harmonics, polyrhythm, rolls. After that we learn to take someone else’s melody as a starting point and lead it somewhere of our own, and at the end we play along to backing tracks.

Everything is shown on Celtic minor, Kurd and Equinox, and the videos explain how to move the patterns to another scale. Filmed from two angles, with an overhead view of the hands on the instrument. The videos have chapters, so it is easy to get back to the right spot. Buy by October 31 and you get two reviews: record yourself playing and send it to the author.
